Last night was the Women Football World Cup Final between USA and Japan. It was one of the cleanest and smoothest football matches I ever saw. I would say that this final was better than many male football finals ever. The girls ran about 120 minutes without showing many signs of tiredness, without making faults, without stalling (unthinkable thing for about any male team) and executing the outs and free kicks very fast. The girls also showed nice technics and super powerful kicks that any male would envy.
The attack was mostly held by the US girls but they missed lots of occasions. I think the champion Title for missing the net from very good positions belonged to Wombach (I called her Wombat
). But the US team did manage to open the score with a great execution of the “girl with the pink fillet (?)”. Don’t remember her name though. And it seemed that this would be the final score. But everybody knows that Japanese are not a nation that would simply give up. They fight until the last minute. And their efforts paid off in the minute 81 when they made a blitz attack and the US defense made a huge mistake. The ball went into the net and the Japanese won their place in the extra two 15 minutes halves.
In the first extra half the US scored again. Wombach managed this time to take advantage of the perfectly served ball and push it into the Japanese net. Again, the game seemed decided. And again the Japanese amazed everyone with their amazing goal scored in the last minutes of the second extra half. They had only one chance left and they took it!
So the game went to penalties where the unprecedented happened. The US players missed the target, from penalty, one after the other! Only Wombach managed to score, but it was too late. The Japanese had scored 3 times and missed only one shot. They were the new champions of the world.
The German female football team was present and they were very happy that Japan won. I could see many reasons to that. I will just stop at “we were defeated by the World champion” excuse-reason.
In conclusion, after seeing this Final, I think the Women Football should be taken more seriously and should deserve a place in everyone’s attention….maybe just as much as the Men Football. And, who knows, maybe more and more countries will open their minds and send their women to play with as much proud as they do with their men. It can be just as technical and just as spectacular, but much more fluid and fair play.
