Ela ela…said the guy from the Ferry (I don’t know if it’s correct to call it a Ferry) Hellenic Seaways High-speed no. 6. We were finally embarking the boat to Mykonos after a few hours of flight until Athens, an hour spent from the Airport to the Acropoles, another hour making pictures there and then the way to Piraeus Port. Of course we reached the other end of the Port. But finally, we found our way to the boat and, with the enthusiasm of the first timer in Greece (at least for me), we embarked among the first. We could not resist not to gossip around the boat a little bit, except for the time when we were sleeping and most probably snoring.

Ten minutes before reaching each port we would be allowed to go outside on the deck and enjoy the naturally cooled air. I remembered how much I wanted to learn Greek (some more than 10 years ago). I even had a notebook with words and sentences that I would practice everyday. I would listen to old Greek music and watch the national Greek TV Channel (yes, back then we had shortly a Greek channel on TV).

We reached Mykonos Port at night and it took us a while to find a taxi that would drive us to the hotel. But it was fine to wait as the air was warm and cooled only by the sea breeze. It reminded me of the summer nights in Romania. Real summers, with hot weather for days! I miss this a lot!

Next morning we woke up in this big (big not vertically but as area), white, flat-roofed hotel called Aphrodite Hotel. It was very nice and cozy and the beach was just across the street. So we crossed the street and ran directly into the most blue and crystal clear sea I’ve ever seen. There were no waves (I can see the surfers a bit disappointed, but to me, this is the type of sea I was used to…with no waves or very little ones). A few meters away on the beach there was this group of Germans who rented windsurfing boards and also had classes. So we subscribed for a course. I don’t think I ever found a sport as difficult as this (so far). It’s not because of the technique which you eventually learn it, it’s because of the weight of the sail. After an hour and a half I could not feel any of my arm, heap and back muscles. I still feel pain.

The town of Mykonos is exactly the way you imagine it: with narrow streets and white houses with red, blue, yellow or green windows and doors. It looked very exotic against the intense blue of the sea and the yellowish color of the dry grass. The shops were open (and full with tourists) until late at night (we left to the hotel at 1am and the shops were still open…maybe some western countries could get inspired from this).  We lost ourselves on some of the small streets and ended up on someone’s roof or someone’s front yard (well, yard is not such an accurate word in this case:) ). But we always managed to find the way back. We just had to follow the light and the noise.

The next days we wondered around from beach to beach, snorkeling, swimming, laying in the sun (or in the shadow), drinking beer and enjoying life. It was a wonderful little vacation, on a wonderful little island, with nice people, beautiful women (not so handsome men, only the gay ones, they were very nice looking!) and good food. I was praying to loose the boat or the plane so I could stay one more day (at least). I wanted to enjoy a little more the country in which civilized Europe was born. But unfortunately, even with the delays of the Ferry and Metro, we managed to catch the plane back on time (the plane also had delay). Jinx! :P
