Last night I watched online the match between Romania and France (counting for Euro Cup 2012). We never defeated France in football (I think) but the people still hope that one day the miracle will happen. And especially last night the tricolors needed a victory to qualify. Plus, the game was the first one on the brand new arena (National Arena) that cost loads of public money. It would have been a nice way to inaugurate it with a victory against the Gallic Rooster. But the national team is in a free fall since 2000. In 11 years of football mediocrity the team achieved very few good results. And last night, would have been a good timing for a comeback. They did not play bad, and a 0-0 score is a good one (considering the poor quality of the team), but it was not enough! With this score, Romania stays home (again!!).
The repeating disappointments make people nostalgic about the past times. Back then the players would give everything in the field. A victory was more than the bonus they would receive for it (if they received any). Back then they were proud, dedicated and hard working. One victory meant more than a lifetime career. In 1930 was the first participation of the Romanian football team in an international competition (the World Cup from Uruguay). The team was chosen by the (then) king Karl the 2st. The amateurs’ team had the first match against Peru. They were in advantage (1-0) until 2 of the players got severely injured (changes were not allowed at that time). In 9 people, they could not resist too long against Peruvian pressure (1-1). But then, the unthinkable (nowadays) happened. One of the injured players (Stanciu) came back into the field (at one leg the knee was dislocated!). He was served a good pass and the guy, supporting himself on the injured leg, pushed the ball in the back of the net (with the other leg). Romania won then with 2-1. But the little trick cost Stanciu his career…forever.
