Bits of life – The red Cap

[One day when I was 8 or 9 years old I was playing with my cousin Dan on the street in front of my grandmother's house. We had just received from my cousin's father a Cap. Mine was yellow and Dan's was red. But we put the Caps on a pillar from the fence because they were bothering us in our play. At some point 3 guys came by and ran off with one of the Caps. I ran after them following until they entered a graveyard that was at the end of the street. My grandmother and Dan arrived at some point but we split up somehow in the graveyard. Here is what happened next :) ]

„Granma, granma…where are you? Dan! Answer me!“ the girl was shouting. But no one answered back. Her grandmother and her cousin Dan disappeared through the grave crosses in their search for the thieves. They were not far away the girl knew but they just wouldn’t answer her call.  The girl began to feel chills down her spine. She was in a graveyard after all and she always was afraid of this kind of places even if she knew it was so silly. “The dead can’t hurt you” she was telling herself. Then she shouts again, and again there is no answer.

The girl looks in all directions hoping to see even a glimpse of her relatives. Then she would follow that direction. But the cold stone crosses stood too tall and too many for her to see anything else but the long road that she stood on.

Eyes focused at any eventual movement and ears hungry for any little sound, the girl goes toward one grave she knows. Somehow she feels that her grandmother would go there to visit her late husband eventually. So she walks quietly through the crosses towards her grandfather’s grave. “The dead are so quiet. Must be so cold down there!”. She hears a call. She looks around to see who is calling her and at first she sees no one. But as she goes outside of the cross field she sees two young men on the main road.

“You! Hey you! Yes, yes you! Come here!” the men called. The girl was toying with the idea to just run as fast as she could in the opposite direction. But the thought that her grandmother and her cousin are somewhere close by gave her courage.  She took off her head the yellow Cap that her uncle had brought her from Canada and hid it in the back of one of the crosses. “You’re not going to take this one too!” she was telling them in her mind.

As she reached them, one of the men gave her the red Cap they had stolen a few minutes ago. “Take it! The other guy that was with us promised us 20 bucks if we stole the Cap, but he gave us nothing so I didn’t give him the Cap either. Take it! I have no use for it anyway! I wanted the money only”. Shocked by the thieves’ reaction she took the Cap and ran towards the cross she had hidden the other one. By the time she found her grandmother and cousin the men were long gone and the girl waved the recovered Cap like a dog waves a rat he had just killed to show it to the owner. Then she asked them why they didn’t answer her call. “I didn’t think you would get lost…you could stay a few moments alone! We were visiting a grave. I see you found the Cap. Let’s go home. I’ll make you a strawberry ice cream as a reward. But YOU have to pick up the strawberries from the garden!” answered the grandmother.
